Gutters are one of the cheapest parts of a house and one of the most expensive to ignore. When they overflow or pull away from the fascia, the water ends up at your foundation. Our gutter guides help you budget for new ones and check whether a quote is in a reasonable range.
Gutter cost guides
- Gutter installation cost: a calculator by length, material, state and number of stories, with retail prices per foot, the cost of hangers and downspouts, and what six installers in six states actually charge.
- Gutter guards cost: do it yourself, a local installer or a national brand like LeafFilter, compared side by side for your gutter length, with retail prices per foot for each guard type.
Coming next: a per-foot check you can use on a quote you already have. We publish a few guides a month so each one can be researched and checked properly.
Before you get a quote
- Measure the roof edges where gutters will run. If you can’t, your home’s square footage divided by 10 is a rough starting point.
- Count the downspouts you have now. Manufacturer instructions call for at least one for every 40 feet of gutter.
- Look at the fascia board behind the gutters. If it’s soft or rotten, it has to be repaired before new gutters go up, and that’s usually priced separately.
- Ask what’s included. Removal of old gutters, downspouts and haul-away are often separate lines on a quote.
Every figure in these guides links to its source and shows the date we checked it. Read how we build our cost estimates.
